What is a K9 Dog?
A police dog is often refered to as a K-9 or K9. It derives from the word 'Canine' which sounds like K9 when pronounced. Theses dogs differ from other dogs in that they are trained to assist the police and other law-enforcement personnel in their work. K9 Dogs search for explosives and drugs. They search for lost people. They know how to find crime scene evidence and will most certainly protect their handlers.

Some K9 history
Since the Middle Ages dogs have been used for law enforcement. But one of the first attempts to use dogs to detect and arrest criminals was made in London in the late nineteenth century. The Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police of London, Sir Charkes Warren, used K9 dogs for identifying and apprehending the famous Jack the Ripper. It was from this point onwards that dogs were trained to perform the task. The K9 solution had been discovered but it was in Continental Europe that dogs were first used on a large scale.
- Sentry and attack dogs - These dogs are used to locate and subdue suspects or enemies and provide security for sensitive or controlled areas
- Search and rescue dogs (SAR) - These dogs are used to locate suspects or find missing people or objects
- Detection or explosive-sniffing dogs - These dogs are used to detect illicit substances such as drugs or explosives which may be carried on a person
- Arson dogs - These dogs are trained to pick up on traces of accelerants at sites of suspected arson
- Cadaver dogs - Some dogs are trained in detecting cadaverine and other odors of decomposing bodies.
Best K9 Dog Breeds
Belgian Malinois Shepherd, German Shepherds and Dutch Shepherds are the most commonly used K9 Dogs. They are best suited for the jobs they need to perform. Other breeds used are: Rottweilers, Boxers, Dobermann Pinschers, Bouvier des Flandres, Giant Schnauzers, and Airedale Terriers. They are all used for both detection and protection. Some other K9 Dog breeds used for detection only are: Basset Hound, Beagle, Bloodhound, English Cocker Spaniel, Springer Spaniel, German Shorthaired Pointer and Labrador Retriever
